Backup
With the Backup service we archive the data of your information system on our storing devices, which are located separately from the information system, and ensure regular backup.

Backup is meant for clients whose data protection requirements call for high quality backup copies that are kept separately from the enterprise facilities, as well as for enterprises that do not wish to spend on backup devices.

The backup system is based on the principle of centralization: we use centralized hardware and software.

Technologies:

  • Our data medium is the magnetic tape and we use LTO (Linear Tape-Open) storage technology.
  • The backup devices include Adic Scalar tape autoloaders that are bundled with two to four IBM Ultrium tape drives which can store from 24 to 211 LTO tapes.
  • Two kinds of backup software is used to control backup devices: the Sun StorageTek Enterprise Backup (Legato Networker) by Sun Microsystems and the Dataprotector by Hewlett-Packard.
  • The software controls the whole backup process (the tape autoloaders, data compression, the database of backup copies and the overall management of the process).

Backup Parameters:

  • Objects for backup - the list of files, folders or data that need backup. It is recommended to back up the configuration of the system, database content and additional software installed on the server.
  • Backup period – the time when backup is performed (a day of the week or other). Applications are kept running during the backup period.
  • Backup type - full backup once a week and incremental backup once a day (different backup schedules possible if necessary).
  • The period of retaining backup copies – Backup copies are usually retained for a month, but can be retained for a longer period on demand.
  • Storage of backup copies – backup copies are stored in a special safe. On demand, the LTO tapes will be given to the client.

Backup parameters are fixed at signing the agreement.

Data are written on the magnetic tape in a compressed form, and therefore the backup files use up to ten times less storage space than data on the server hard drives.

Backup copies are made according to the backup schedule previously agreed on by the client. MicroLink is responsible for adding or removing the tapes in the tape library. We will also send an overview of daily backups in the beginning of each month.
