Storage Area Network

Introduction

Our SAN uses the modular array storage system of Thunder 9570 by Hitachi Data Systems. The system is characterized by redundancy and has two controllers, each with two fibre-optical ports for connection to the SAN. Thunder 9570 includes 2 GB of cache memory and transfers frequently used data to servers. Fibre-optical storage and economical SATA disks can be added to the device.

Maintenance and Support

All devices belonging to the storage infrastructure have 24-7 of manufacturer’s support. MicroLink’s Support Team ensures the timely preventive maintenance and quick problem solving 24-7 for our clients’ storage devices. In order to perform backup of large data arrays, the backup server and tape library have been connected to the SAN.

Technical Specifications

The disks in the storage device have been combined in groups of five to form RAID 5 groups. This is the optimum configuration for preventing data loss in case of disk failure. Failed drives are automatically replaced with hot spare drives. The storage area is divided into 16-GB logical unit numbers (LUNs).

Two McData Sphereon 4500 fiber-optical switches have been installed into the SAN to connect the storage device and servers. The switches have four physical connections with the drive to ensure the connection between the switches and the storage device in case of failure.

Servers can be connected simultaneously to one or both switches. Servers which require less reliability (e.g. test servers and development severs) are connected with one switch. Servers requiring a high level of reliability are usually connected to both switches, ensuring a fail-safe system.
